TOTB (for short) is an education platform and community hub for songwriters who want to grow their writing, overcome their blocks and make creativity a priority in their lives.
We’ve been professional songwriters and artists for about 15 years, and over the course of our careers we’ve dealt with our fair share of writer’s block, self-doubt and creative burnout. Those struggles taught us so much, and through them we’ve learned how to cultivate long-lasting and healthy creativity that keeps us on a path of growth and joy with our songwriting!
We started TOTB in 2016 to help other writers who may be facing some of the same challenges. Our workshops and resources are designed to help fellow writers break away from those unhelpful mindsets and patterns and get them into a place where their creativity is flowing and evolving. We take a holistic approach to songwriting, focusing not on how to write a hit song but on how to love the process of songwriting and embrace our strengths while honing our weaknesses without judgment.
Since its inception, TOTB has built up a wonderfully supportive community and has expanded to include a variety of workshops, interviews with professionals, monthly songwriting challenges, and free weekly Community Classes on a variety of topics. And because we’ve been close friends and collaborators for over a decade, we pride ourselves on cultivating the same kind of easy-going, supportive and fun vibe in our workshops as we have in our writing sessions.

Born in NY and currently living in Nashville, Bess is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, producer and teacher. She has written and released 6 albums and EPs of original music, including a 2013 release on Cherrytree/Interscope Records with her female-fronted rock band, Secret Someones. Her music has been used in ad campaigns such as Cheerios and Google, and in TV shows such as Teen Mom & Pretty Little Liars. She has been a guitarist and back-up singer for many artists including Ingrid Michaelson & Rachel Platten. In 2019, she was a guitarist in The Go-Go’s Broadway Musical, Head Over Heels, which featured Broadway’s first all-female pit band. Most recently, Bess co-produced four new songs for Ingrid Michaelson’s Songs for the Season Deluxe Edition, including a duet featuring Zooey Deschanel. In addition to writing, producing and playing, Bess runs a songwriting school and community called Thinking Outside the Blocks, with her longtime friend and co-writing partner, Allie Moss. Currently she is writing with and producing several artists out of her home studio, Sideways House, and working on her first self-produced EP of original music.
